I nominate Olivia Schmidt for Student of the Month based on the character traits of responsibility and determination. In our classroom we focus a lot on having a growth mindset. We recite a daily pledge: “Today I will have a good learning attitude, be an active learner and grow my brain, and be a mindful problem solver.” Olivia takes this pledge to heart. Olivia comes to school with a good learning attitude. She rushes into the classroom everyday with completed homework. Olivia is eager to read, is developing a good reading stamina, and gets excited about what she is reading. Olivia takes responsibility for her own learning and is a mindful problem solver. She frequently uses resources around the room to help her with her learning. During writing and word work time Olivia uses the word wall and other words around the room to figure out how to spell and write words. During math time she uses the number poster and number line. Olivia shows determination with her learning. If something is challenging, she works hard and practices until she gets it. At the beginning of the year, Olivia had trouble writing some of her lowercase letters. Olivia practiced her handwriting in her handwriting packet everyday and her handwriting has improved a lot. It is for these reasons that I am nominating Olivia for student of the month. Redgranite Elementary Mrs. Tompkins

On Friday, Mrs. Rector and Mrs. Hopfensperger's friends learned about the effects that water has on different types of wood. They also built a raft using cedar wood and particle board to see which would hold more passengers.

Keeping An Open Mind! "The Sandwich Swap" by Queen Rania Al Abdullah is a story about friendship, acceptance, and keeping an open mind. These third grade students learned a lesson and were introduced to a food they had never heard of before, hummus. Keeping with the morale of the story the girls kept an open mind when they tried hummus for the first time.

Thrivent Financial was kind enough to donate money for free reading books to Mrs. Belter’s CPR. These books were chosen with teens aged interests in mind with a variety of reading levels to accommodate every student. When the books arrived, the students were so excited to check them out! Love to see the excitement and the love for reading!

Parkside School 7th grade student Kendall Gustke organized a district-wide student hat day and staff jeans day on Friday, November 8, to help her WASD bus driver, Lupe Cervantes, with costs of treatment for his wife, Yola, as she fights breast cancer. This student’s exemplary character is demonstrated day in and day out. He truly is the epitome of all of the Wautoma Area School District character traits. He is honest, dependable, trustworthy, and responsible. He is respected by his peers and adults here at Redgranite. He is always considerate of others and he always looks to find the positive in every situation. He is also willing to lend a helping hand to his fellow students and his teachers when needed. He is a true leader in and out of the classroom. Over the years, his determination and commitment to learning has led him to great successes with his academics. With such great character, he certainly has a bright future ahead of him. It is with honor and admiration that I nominate Korban Withall as Redgranite's October Student of the Month.

Third grade students at Redgranite recently read a book titled Third Grade Angels written by Jerry Spinelli. In writing class they learned about the parts of a friendly letter and how to compose a friendly letter. They then wrote a letter to author Jerry Spinelli giving him praise for writing a book filled with surprises that kept them on the edge of their seats. The letters were sent off and the children are patiently awaiting a reply. Pictured above are Ian Moldenhauer, Amelia Meckelberg, and Monica Hansen.
